My Storytelling....Story

Do you ever struggle when someone asks you how long you've been doing what you do and you're not really sure where to start?

Like if you're a lawyer, do you start with passing the Bar exam? Or your first job in the field? Or the roundabout way you decided to study law in the first place that had something to do with the mistreatment of a family member when you were a child?

Or if you're an artist... do you start with the first piece you sold? Or the first class you took? Or the first time you discovered how magical it was to smear color where there wasn't color before -- maybe finger painting in preschool?

Or if you're a mother... do you start with the day your baby was born or the moment you first hoped you would have a child of your own? It's complicated, right? And the temptation is to list of some dates or list of some benchmarks. And while there's nothing fundamentally wrong with that... have you ever told the story? Or one of the many stories of how you found your way to what you do right now?

My Storytelling Story

I struggle with the answer to that question too sometimes. And not long ago... I remembered this story as an answer. One moment on a long journey to becoming a professional storyteller.

And if you listen to this story, I bet you'll hear pieces of yourself or your own experience that you'll recognize. Because that's the beauty with actually telling the story -- we often discover that, no matter what we do or where we came from, there are similarities we never would have expected.
