In the Nurse's Office
One Tuesday morning in the spring, Michael and I dropped the kids off at school and joyfully started our journey to the Hamptons—just the two of us. It was our first taste of normalcy after a year of lockdowns and masks in the city. After so much 2020-style togetherness, we were looking forward to 36 hours of quality time.
Once we were about 45 minutes away from our New York City home, though, the phone rang. It was an unknown number, but it had a New York City area code. We exchanged anxious glances, knowing that this couldn’t be good news. Nervously, we picked up the phone.
It was a pandemic parent’s worst nightmare: the nurse’s office was calling.
What happened next is not what you expect. Today, I’ll share the story of our attempt to transition from our “new normal” back to pre-COVID normalcy as well as the valuable lessons my daughter’s visits to the nurse taught me along the way.
