Where Should I Start?

If you’ve been following along for a while, you are familiar with the endless applications of strategic storytelling. When you realize how many stories you have to tell and how many opportunities you have to tell them, it can be overwhelming. This overwhelm often leads to inaction.

Here is what you should do if you find yourself wondering, “Where should I start?”

Choose one upcoming, specific communication event. Use your calendar as a guide if you need to. It can be any communication event—a meeting, an email, or a conversation. Think about the point that you want to make at that event. What do you want the audience to think or feel? What do you want them to know? And, importantly, what do you want them to do?

Reflect on your goal for the event, and choose a story that will serve that goal.

By focusing on telling this one story well, you’ll be able to abandon overwhelm and step into action. Then, you’ll be well on your way to fine-tuning your storytelling skills.
