Sitting Next to Greatness

“It comes with the territory.”

Whether you’re a new parent feeling overwhelmed from sleep deprivation or a c-suite executive lamenting your lack of free time, your frustrations have likely been met with this phrase. Often delivered with a shrug and a knowing glance, the old adage is used to justify life’s most challenging inconveniences.

Not only is this phrase unhelpful, it’s inaccurate. Although we often feel powerless in controlling the circumstances in our lives, that couldn’t be further from the truth.

You have the power to decide which rules exist within your life. You get to keep the ones that feel good and reject those that don’t—even if they do “come with the territory.”

By thoughtfully designing our own lives, we can regain power over our circumstances. More importantly, we can let go of our concerns about appearances and instead focus on simply being true to ourselves.

Tune in to hear about my encounter with an actor who rewrote the rules of fame, and learn why I respect him even more for it.
